Teldah Mawarire

Teldah Mawarire has 14 years’ experience in newspapers and is passionate about Africa and its vast diaspora.

 

Having opted out of joining university in favour of a newspaper internship, she started working at age 19 in Kwekwe, a small mining town in Zimbabwe’s Midlands Province. There she did everything, from reporting on small-town politics to selling advertising space.

 

In Zimbabwe Mawarire worked in various capacities at the Financial Gazette and the Zimbabwe Independent. She now lives in South Africa, where she moved to take up more sub-editing and writing opportunities.

 

Mawarire completed a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Science and an Honours degree in Development Studies. She is working towards a Master’s degree in the same discipline. She attended exchange programmes in Germany and the USA (Berkeley University),

 

A women’s rights activist, Mawarire also does extensive research, particularly on land reform programmes in Africa.
